Improving Human Health
From the food we eat to the air we breathe to the clothes we wear, chemicals – both man made and naturally occurring – are a part of everyday life. In an effort to promote optimal human health and better protect the environment, there is an increasing interest in understanding the safety thresholds of these chemicals.
Tox21, a multi-agency government initiative, is underway to screen thousands of chemicals for potential toxicity and adverse health effects. Actionable data ensuring safer medicines, foods, cosmetics, and other consumer products will be generated from these efforts.
CDI’s iCell® GABANeurons and iCell Cardiomyocytes have been used to develop human cell assays that are amenable to high-throughput screening protocols and predicting biological response to potential toxicants. As a result, these iPS cell-derived products show great potential for use in Tox21 and other initiatives that screen for environmental toxins.
Better Nutrition, Healthier Lives
A wide range of iCell and MyCell® products can be used to better understand the nutritional aspects of food products. This research is expected to play an important role in helping to prevent or slow the onset of certain serious human health conditions, including obesity, diabetes, and cognitive disorders.
An Alternative to Animal Testing
In addition to these initiatives to improve human health, efforts are underway to reduce the use of animals in product safety testing and biomedical research studies. While whole animals have been used historically as model systems for predicting human safety and efficacy, consumer and medical product companies are under pressure to switch to non-animal models whenever possible. Because CDI’s iPS cell-derived differentiated cells are biologically relevant and available in industrial quantities, they provide an alternative to the use of live animals.
